Ethical Holiday Gift Guide 2018
With the holidays in full swing, it’s very important to forget how much waste is generated from unwanted gifts, wrapping papers and plastic packaging, not to mention all the cheap gifts that are disposed of just weeks after they’re opened due to faults, breaks or cyclical fashion. On the topic of sustainability and gifts, I’ve put together a list of gifts to give, places to shop and ways to reduce your waste this season by both what you buy, how you buy, and how you gift it, as well as alternatives for physical gifts such as experiences, charities and more.
My focus this year is on handmade/artisan products, and people who package in plastic-free or as little as plastic possible packaging. Most small businesses/artists will happily listen to your request to package in less plastic if you ask too!
Based in Australia - Ships internationally
If you’re looking for a beautiful statement print for your home, we are in LOVE with the kiss and lifestyle collection from Sefton Segedin. Sold in a variety of sizes, you can pick whichever size fits your space without breaking the bank, but knowing you’re supporting an artist. You could also order an original print from them, but they have a wide range of prints to select from.
Rugs from Cold Picnic
Based in the US
You know you’ve become an adult when you care about rugs.. Who thought a rug could be a statement piece? But really, these rugs are so beautiful and timeless, but still quirky enough to get comments from whoever steps foot on them (literally). Ranging in colors and patterns, we can’t recommend these enough. See if they have a local stockist and check their sample sales, they always have great pieces in there!
Local to Portland
I’d like to hope everyone else is as obsessed with ceramics as I am. Wolf Ceramics are local to Portland and currently have a whole lot of stuff on sale right now, so if you’re a mug-gift-giver like I am, get on this.
Local to Portland
This distillery is run and owned by WOMEN and they make THE BEST Gin and Whiskey. We keep one of both on our shelf at all times, and scored their first batch of Whiskey. Their bottles are super cute and can easily be repurposed! You can pick them up at most liquor stores, check their websites for stockists.
If you love your artisan homewares and care a lot about makers, buy yourself some pillows from The Citizenry. I am obsessed with their textile goods and they’re the perfect gift for someone who loves their home. They can be a little costly but are worth the investment.
I am obsessed with Schoolhouse. They have such a unique range of home goods and they’re known for the lights they produce. I adore their calendars and office goods, as well as bathroom goods, so there’s something for everyone.
US based + Australian Shipping
The best gift you can give is one that was made at the cost of another’s safety. Everlane has the perfect range of clothing, made ethically and with transparent pricing, you know what you’re paying for. I’ll be gifting myself a few mock-neck shirts and their cashmere is totally appropriate for the holidays and the colder months. They also have free 2 day shipping before Christmas.
Whats better than a pair of ethically made shoes on sale? Not a whole lot. Not only will their shoes be a lifelong investment, they’ll repair your shoes if there’s an issue. One of my shoes broke a few wears and they repaired them for me (or offered to cover the cost for a leather cobbler). If you love stories of innovation, go watch their vision story.
Bridge and Burn
For both men and women’s goods, Bridge and Burn is amazing. They care a lot about their manufacturing and making their pieces limited, but they’re also really trendy and modern pieces. You can buy online or in store in their Portland location.
Every day items
The James Brand
Local to Portland
If you’re buying a gift for your dad, guy friend, husband, brother etc, The James Brand has some of the coolest handcrafted knives. With a variety of amazing styles and designs, they are both practical and stylish.
Local to Portland
Our best friends make amazing leather goods from deadstock leather. Handcrafted, literally every single piece, and designed by husband + wife owners, we’re totally obsessed with everything they create.
If you’re a Portlander, you need a good bike. These amazing bikes are made from carbon fibre and they own their own factory hence saving on the costs of manufacturing. Bikes are good for the environment, good for your help and a great way to reduce your carbon footprint!
Secret Supper is a full and immersive dining and communal experience. If you’re lucky enough to buy tickets, the team of SS will provide a memorable meal and styling experience for you to remember. This is the perfect thing to give someone who you want to spend time with, and buy two tickets so you can join them.
Distillery Row Tour
If you’re a lover of local alcohol, take a Distillery tour. If you’re not a Portlander, find a local tour in your own city. It’s a great gift for a friend or a sibling that will bring you both closer together.
A perfect way to reduce your waste is by changing out your wrapping from paper/thick plastic layered paper to reusable bags or scraps of material. You could also use newspaper and paint/decorate it with different dried flowers. Here’s how I’ll be wrapping this year!
I’d love to hear what you’re gifting this year!
